Fire crews are working around the clock to contain a wildfire in Southern California. But the Shirley Fire continues to rage. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. FOREST SERVICE CINDY THILL, SAYING: "Last night, the latest report at about 10 o'clock was 810 acres. And this morning with new mapping that flew last night, and people on the ground, we've discovered it's 1800 acres." As plumes of smoke travel across the Kern River Valley, around 500 homes have been evacuated. And some residents have fled to a shelter set up by the Red Cross at the Lake Isabella Senior Center. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN, SAYING: "Last night we had people inside the shelter and also people parked outside with their RV's and then we fed them dinner and breakfast." Nearly 300 firefighters are fighting the blaze which broke out Friday. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. FOREST SERVICE CINDY THILL, SAYING: "We had nighttime helicopter drops. That is not a common thing; that was very rare to get that. So the helicopters were active during the night and dropping water." Officials say the fire has been fanned by winds and dry conditions. And forecasted weather reports, including warm temperatures, gusty winds and low humidity, could complicate firefighters' efforts.
