The lines of cars stretch as far as the eye can see. Hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing their homes in Mosul after fighters from the militant Sunni group ISIS seized a number of Iraqi towns and cities in the past week. They've left their homes and belongings to escape the fierce fighting and heavy bloodshed. ARBIL, IRAQ (JUNE 16, 2014) (UNITED NATIONS WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME (WFP) - ACCESS ALL) (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED NATIONS WORLD FOOD PROGAMME (WFP) SPOKESWOMAN, HILDEGARD TUTTINGHOLFF, SAYING: "On the day of the attack there were huge crowds at the check points. The luckier ones had friends and families and working permits and thus could obtain easy access to this region. The more unfortunate had to wait and queue hours and hours in the bright sun, temperatures rise about 40 degrees now, waiting for the permission to enter safer areas." This is where many end up. A spartan refugee camp in Kalak in the north of the country, Food and water is scarce and electricity supplies have been cut. The UN's World Food Programme says it's begun the mammoth task of feeding the hundreds of thousands of displaced. Others come to these shelters in Alquish run by the United Nations refugee agency. This was the village school. Now it's home for around 150 people. (SOUNDBITE) (Kurdish) INTERNALLY DISPLACED IRAQI WOMAN, AMAL MAHMOOD ISMAIL, SAYING: "We were not rich, but nor were we poor. We used to live in a rented house, we had a good day-to-day life; we had breakfast together every morning. But now my family is torn apart." Many of these refugees left with just the clothes on their backs to escape the chaos and anarchy that is now sweeping northern Iraq and threatens to break the country apart.
