Seattle police shoot freeway spray-painter

June 17 - Seattle's Interstate 5 is shut down for hours after police shoot a driver who stopped to spray-paint the roadway and then brandished a knife when confronted. Jillian Kitchener reports.

Stuck at a standstill... it was impossible for all these drivers to understand the bizarre reason for the traffic. Police shut down Seattle's Interstate 5 for hours on Monday. This, after receiving calls of a man spray-painting the roadway. (SOUNDBITE) (English) WASHINGTON STATE PATROL SPOKESMAN CLIFF PRATT, SAYING: "Just looking back there, for some reason, we don't know, there's a very large green circle. Right in the middle of the freeway." They were also notified that a pickup truck had swerved, blocked two lanes and then caught fire. When a state trooper confronted the suspect, he took out a knife. (SOUNDBITE) (English) WASHINGTON STATE PATROL SPOKESMAN CLIFF PRATT, SAYING: "Our officer tried to talk him out of getting that knife, or, putting that knife down. The officer then tased this person... or attempted to tase him, which had no effect on this subject." Police then shot and wounded the man. (SOUNDBITE) (English) EYEWITNESS DIANE JAROSH, SAYING: "Once we found out there was gunfire, it was pretty scary." The man was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not immediately known. Commuters were left to tackle the traffic, or find other means of getting around.
