For years, the Washington "Redskins" football team has faced scrutiny over what Native Americans and others say is a slur - the team's name.
Now, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the federal trademarks for the NFL's Washington "Redskins" name.
It was a decision made by a Patent Office administrative tribunal following years of criticism. Native Americans had also petitioned to overturn Redskins' trademarks.
The ruling, however, does not mean that the trademarks can no longer be used by the NFL club. They only mean that they are no longer registered, the agency said.
