June 19 - North Korea marks the ''2014 Day of Koreans with Disabilities'' with performances and sporting events. Tara Cleary reports.

North Korean children perform in the country's annual celebration of "Day of Koreans with Disabilities". The video footage, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, shows disabled students performing songs and dances and taking part in sporting events at the Pyongyang Schoolchildren's Palace. Ri Ok Su, says her hearing-impaired son has really benefitted from the school's programs. SOUNDBITE: Ri Ok Su, mother of hearing-impaired performer, saying (Korean): "In the past, he didn't do well with ordinary people and was very depressed. Now, however, he dances and participates in performances. I'm so proud of him I just can't put it into words." North Korea adopted a law in 2003 protecting the rights of the disabled, and also signed the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2013. Some activists believe it's are part of the isolated nation's effort to receive more international aid.
