Texas teenager faces 99 years over pot brownies

June 20 - A 19-year-old Texas man suspected of baking and selling pot brownies was shocked to learn that he faces between five and 99 years in jail. Vanessa Johnston reports.

Nineteen-year-old Jacob Lavoro is facing up to ninety-nine years in jail for baking and selling pot brownies. SOUNDBITE (English) JACOB LAVORO, WHO'S FACING 99 YEARS IN JAIL FOR SELLING POT BROWNIES, SAYING: "I'm not a criminal, I'm just a kid." He addressed the media and supporters outside a Texas courthouse Thursday. SOUNDBITE (English) JACOB LAVORO, WHO'S FACING 99 YEARS IN JAIL FOR SELLING POT BROWNIES, SAYING: "It was sickening to me. I first found that out when I was in jail and I almost threw up when I heard it, actually did throw up. I turned white in my face." About a hundred people turned up before a pre-trial court hearing. Jacob's mother is outraged by the potential sentence. SOUNDBITE (English) JACOB'S MOTHER SAYING: "Murderers get less time than that and the thought that my son could go to prison at all is something that I can't even get my head around." In court, Jacob's attorney, Jack Holmes, filed a motion to dismiss the evidence. He claims that police officers entered Jacob's apartment illegally. Lavoro turned down a plea deal for second degree felony. His lawyer hopes the case will be thrown out.
