ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Chinese police shot dead 13 attackers in the country's restive Xinjiang region on Saturday morning (June 21), after the group drove a car into a Kashgar police station and detonated an explosive device, state television reported. Three police officers were "lightly wounded" in the attack on Saturday morning, but there were no casualties among the public, China's state television, CCTV said. "We just received the following information. This morning, a group of gangsters drove a car into a police station in Kashgar prefecture's Kargilik county and detonated an explosive device. Policemen took decisive action and killed 13 gangsters. Three policemen suffered from light injuries. No member of the public was injured or killed. Investigations are ongoing. The local society continues to operate as normal," said the anchor, Liang Yan. China has been cracking down after a spate of recent attacks centred around the far-western region of Xinjiang. Chinese authorities executed over a dozen people for attacks in the region earlier this month and three others for an attack on Beijing's central Tiananmen Square. In May, 31 people were killed in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang region, after attackers threw explosive into an open market. It was the worst attack China had suffered in years.
