Mudslide crashes into historic Minnesota brewery

A mudslide destroys several apartments inside an historic brewery, as Minnesota deals with the aftermath of heavy rains and flooding. Vanessa Johnston reports.

A mudslide ploughed through this historic Minnesota brewery Thursday. It crashed into five apartments housed in the old building, which dates back to 1860. Eight residents were evacuated. Barbara Lee manages the property. SOUNDBITE (English) PROPERTY MANAGER BARBARA LEE SAYING: "We can't really tell how far up the hill this landslide came from, but it was obviously a large chunk of dirt that came flying down the hill." It is unclear how this will affect plans to restart the brewery this spring. No beer has been produced there for 80 years. Minnesota has been dealing with heavy rains and flooding this week. The National Guard was called in to monitor the levies, as water levels continue to rise. SOUNDBITE (English) UNIDENTIFIED NATIONAL GUARDSMAN SAYING: "It's an important role for us, it's something we're trained to do, and we're capable of doing. We're here to help in any way we can." They plan to stay for at least the next couple of weeks.
