U.S. Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi narrowly defeated challenger Chris McDaniel on Tuesday in a high-profile runoff election. Natalie Thomas reports.

It was a close one, but U.S. Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi narrowly defeated challenger Chris McDaniel in the Republican party runoffs.
Cochran beat McDaniel by fewer than 7,000 votes out of more than 370,000 cast
This was a bitterly contested runoff, pitting the Republican establishment against the Tea Party
Cochran thanked his supporters for their work in bringing about the victory
SOUNDBITE (English) MISSISSIPPI SENATOR, THAD COCHRAN, SAYING:
"But you are the ones who helped reach all the voters, to make sure they knew they were important to this election because it's a group effort, it's not a solo, and so well all have a right to be proud of our state tonight"
Many see today's run off as a referendum on the direction of the Republican party
