ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: A giant panda gave birth to a pair of cubs on Monday (June 30) morning in the central Sichuan province's Chengdu city, state media reported. The new-born pandas, one male and one female, weighed 146 grams and 117 grams respectively, state television CCTV said. State television footage shows staff at the Chengdu Research Base of Giang Panda Breeding examining the hairless cubs that are roughly the size of a human hand. The mother panda, Yaxing, has given birth once before. Forty-nine pandas were born in China last year, but only 42 survived, the official Xinhua news agency said. Globally, there are 376 pandas who have been bred in captivity, while an estimated 1,600 pandas remain in the wild, Xinhua said.
