A group of protesters shouting anti-immigration slogans blocked the arrival of three buses carrying undocumented Central American families to a U.S. Border Patrol station in California on Tuesday (July 01) after they were flown to San Diego from Texas.
The arrival of the undocumented immigrants, a group of adults and their children numbering about 140 people at a border patrol station in Murrieta, about 60 miles (97 km) north of San Diego, sparked an outcry from the town's mayor, who said the migrants posed a public safety threat to his community.
A group of 150 protesters filled a street leading to the access road for the processing center in Murrieta, blocking the two buses from reaching the facility, and disregarding orders shouted by local police to disperse.
Bryan Escobedo was among them.
SOUNDBITE Protester, Bryan Escobedo saying (English):
"You know, everybody knows you just got to throw up a wall and maintain that wall. Apparently Obama can't do that."
There was also a group on hand in support of the undocumented immigrants.
Mexican-American singer Lupillo Rivera, best known for his Spanish-language songs, called the protest wrong..
SOUNDBITE Lupillo Rivera, singer, saying (Spanish):
"I am protesting against those who are protesting against the immigrants because the immigrants are the ones who come to work here. We are their cooks, we are their babysitters, we are their gardeners, we are their construction workers we are the people who work for them and we are here to represent all of them."
After about 25 minutes, the three buses backed up, turned around and left. A board member of the union representing border patrol agents, said the buses would likely be rerouted to one of six other Border Patrol stations in the San Diego sector.
