Heavy rains brought on by Typhoon Neoguri triggered a landslide in the mountains of central Japan on Wednesday (July 9), killing a twelve year old boy and injuring three other people in his family after rocks and boulders crashed into his house, sweeping it away.
The landslide was captured on a closed circuit river monitoring camera by the Japanese Transport and Land Ministry.
Officials were expecting the approaching typhoon to hit them the next day, but a downpour up to 70 millimetres (2.8 inches) per hour caused the "unanticipated" disaster, Japanese paper Nikkei reported local officials as saying.
Nagiso mayor, Masamitsu Miyakawa, issued an evacuation alert 10 minutes after the mudslide started hitting the town.
The boy's death brings the total number of fatalities caused by the storm to three. 50 other people have been injured across the country, mostly after they were toppled by strong winds.
On Thursday (July 10), heavy rain battered a wide swathe of Japan as a weakened but still dangerous storm made landfall and headed east.
Neoguri, which first threatened Japan as a super typhoon this week, had weakened to a tropical storm by the time it ploughed ashore on the westernmost main island of Kyushu. But it was still packing wind gusts of up to 126 kph (78 mph).
