A fast-moving fire rips through an apartment building in Lowell, Massachusetts killing seven people and forcing others to jump to safety. Linda So reports.

Fire tore through a three story apartment building in Lowell, Massachusetts early Thursday morning killing seven people. Authorities are looking into reports that witnesses heard an explosion similar to the sound of fireworks going off before the building went up in flames. SOUNDBITE: STATE FIRE MARSHAL STEPHEN COAN, SAYING: "It is a piece of information that is important to us at this time as we initiate the origin and cause investigation." Fire officials say the seven victims were found in two separate apartments on the third floor. The fast-moving fire forcing people to take desperate measures to escape. SOUNDBITE: LOWELL FIRE CHIEF EDWARD PITTA, SAYING: "Some people jumped and some people were taken over the aerial ladder from the third floor." SOUNDBITE: LOWELL FIRE CHIEF EDWARD PITTA, SAYING: "They did have quite a volume of fire when they first arrived. The building is somewhat chopped up so access to some areas was somewhat difficult." Parts of the building collapsed. Fire officials say as part of their investigation, they will look into whether the old building was up to code.
