Melvin Santiago had always dreamed of being a police officer. But after just seven months on the job, he was killed during what police say was an ambush. SOUNDBITE: MELVIN SANTIAGO'S MOTHER, SAYING: "It was his dream, and he was living his dream. At the same time, he didn't have to die like that." His mom overcome with grief. Police say Santiago was shot dead early Sunday morning while responding to what was believed to a robbery call at this Jersey City Walgreens. But turns out, police say, there was no robbery attempt at all. The suspect Lawrence Campbell was waiting outside for officers to arrive after attacking a store security guard and stealing his gun. SOUNDBITE: JERSEY CITY MAYOR STEVEN FULOP, SAYING: "Surveillance camera show Campbell walked outside and speaking to a witness, at which time he apologized for his conduct in Walgreen's and then subsequently told the witness to watch the news later today because he's going to be famous." Police say the gunman walked up to Santiago and opened fire while he was still sitting in his patrol car. SOUNDBITE: MELVIN SANTIAGO'S MOTHER, SAYING: "My son was 23-years-old and he was a good boy and he didn't deserve to get a bullet in his head." After shooting Santiago, police say the gunman opened fire on responding officers. He was shot dead by police.
