In central Washington's Chelan County, ten miles north of Leavenworth, some 860 families have been told to evacuate. A wildfire driven by the wind is racing through forests, threatening homes. Another 800 homes were less seriously threatened. The blaze forced the closing of a 35-mile stretch of highway in the Cascade Mountains. Fire officials think the fire is about two-square miles, but it's so smoky and moving so fast, they aren't exactly sure of its size. Worsening wildfire activity prompted both Washington and Oregon to declare a state of emergency. Hot weather and winds are expected to fuel the fire.
