Gunfire and explosions echo around an area near Kabul airport.
Witnesses said attackers launched their assault after dawn on Thursday.
(SOUNDBITE)(Pashto) JAHANGER KHAN, LOCAL RESIDENT, SAYING:
"The attack started with rocket fire from these buildings towards the airport, then foreign and Afghan forces started firing from their towers. Also a car on the road caught fire and exploded. It seems that there are fighters positioned in the first block. As you can hear there's fighting going on."
Officials said a number of militants had burst into a building just north of the airport but were quickly surrounded by Afghan forces.
It wasn't clear right away how many militants were involved, nor who was behind the attack.
Kabul police said the airport was not damaged.
There've been no immediate reports of casualties.
Militant rocket fire towards the airport is a weekly occurrence but such full-on frontal attacks are rare.
The airport is used as a major base for NATO-led forces and security there is tight.
