The attack on Kabul's international airport went on for about four hours. A group of four heavily-armed insurgents opened fire on the airport from the roof of a nearby building. The assault finally ended after a fierce gun battle between the militants and Afghan forces. Afghanistan's deputy interior minister says the militants all died. (SOUNDBITE)(Dari) GENERAL MOHAMMAD AYOUB SALANGI, DEPUTY INTERIOR MINISTER, SAYING: "Four attackers were killed without any casualties to our forces. Two RPGs, one machine gun and two AK47s were left in the area by the attackers. The operation ended successfully, thank God there were no civilian or military casualties." All flights were diverted to other airports as the fighting erupted. Kabul's airport comes under fire from militants most weeks but full-frontal attacks are rare. It's a major base for NATO-led forces and is heavily protected because of it. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest assault.
