Health officials confirm a man in Florida has been diagnosed with chikungunya becoming the first locally contracted case in the U.S. Linda So reports.

There's another mosquito-borne virus to worry about. The first locally acquired cases of chikungunya have surfaced in Florida. The virus is spread when a mosquito bites an infected person and then bites someone else. SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED HEALTH OFFICIAL, SAYING: They only fly maybe a little ways, they're not strong flyers, they're a very dark black mosquito with white markings." Because mosquitoes breed in water, health officials say it's a good idea to get rid of any standing water around the house. SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED HEALTH OFFICIAL, SAYING: "Once the water sits and it gets nutrients, any type of nutrients in the water, that's a potential hazard for these mosquitoes to lay their eggs and hatch." Chikungunya has been spreading rapidly in the Caribbean, but this is the first time local transmission has been reported within the U.S. Symptoms are similar to the flu. They include fever, muscle ache, headaches, and rash.
