Waves of violence erupt in the French capital, as reverberations of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are felt in Paris. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators threw stones and bottles. Police lobbed tear gas and stun grenades back. Some protesters climbed on top of a building and ripped an Israeli flag. At least one car was set on fire. Shouting "Israel, murderer", they gathered in large numbers in northern Paris calling for an end to the violence in Gaza. They came here despite a ban on protests, which is rare in France but President Hollande said it was needed to keep public order. Tensions were inflamed here when Israel sent ground forces into the Gaza Strip after days of air and naval barrages failed to stop Palestinian rockets. But also in Israel there was opposition to the offensive. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered to march in Tel Aviv. These protesters are heckled by a handful of Israelis who supported the assault, as police attempted to divide the crowds. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PROTESTER, SHLOMO KROLL, SAYING: "I believe that it's very important to cease this military operation, this war, the carnage in Gaza because it's unnecessary, it's inhumane and the Israeli government, the one which chose war and not peace and failed the peace talks by the settlement construction and they provoked and promoted this war. About 75, 77 percent of the victims of this war are civilians, regular people, their life in Gaza is hell under the bombardments. It must be stopped." Israel says that five soldiers and two of its civilians have been killed, while Gaza officials say at least 345 Palestinians, including 70 children, have died in the 13 day conflict.
