A very happy homecoming in Houston for these teens and their families. Forty-three young members of Congregation Emanuel spent three weeks in Israel and came home to their relieved parents on Monday. NATS HUGS They made the trip just as Israel and Hamas were firing missiles back and forth and as Israel began its ground offense into Gaza. SOUNDBITE: MICHELLE BROOKNER, PARENT, SAYING: "The group I know they tracked where they are, and that if there was any worry they would move them to safer territory." They did move to safer territory. The students, all ages 15 to 18, were supposed to pass through Tel Aviv and Haifa. The crisis in the Middle East changed all that. Instead, they went to the Dead Sea and Masada. Not the itinerary they expected, but still a once--in-a-lifetime opportunity. SOUNDBITE: ANNA ABRAMOWITZ, STUDENT, SAYING: "With what's going on in Israel right now, I've learned a lot about both sides and how people really live and I just feel like I learned so much more than I ever could have learned and I'm just so grateful for that." Grateful, too, to finally be home. After witnessing first-hand a slice of history, however difficult it was to watch.
