WWII female pilot honored on her 100th birthday

100-year-old Mayme Tanner is honored not only for marking her 100th birthday, but for serving as a ''W.A.S.P. female service pilot during World War II. Mana Rabiee reports.

Mayme Tanner of Houston just turned a hundred. SOUNDBITE: MAYME TANNER, CENTURION, SAYING: "I don't get around much. I stay in my bed most of the time." But she hasn't forgotten her favorite memories. SOUNDBITE: MAYME TANNER, CENTURION, SAYING: "Flying my airplanes...It was a thrilling experience." Mayme was a W.A.S.P. Women Airforce Service Pilots serving in World War II. NATS MAYME They moved planes around the country and flew test flights because the men were flying in combat. SOUNDBITE: MAYME TANNER, CENTURION, SAYING: "My first solo flight we encountered a big north wind but I was ready for it. I was trained. Enough for it." SOUNDBITE: CAROL CAIN, WASP W.W.II MUSEUM, SAYING: "This opened the doors for women in our military institutes." Mayme was honored on Friday but it wasn't just to celebrate the centurion's birthday. NATS MAN "We wish you a happy and healthy year ahead, Sincerely George Bush." It was to thank her for her service as a veteran, too. NATS MAN "On behalf of the Air Force, The President, we offer this flag for your Faithful and dedicated service during W.W.II." Happy Birthday Mayme, and thank you.
