California wildfire near Sacramento forces 1,200 to flee

A wind-swept California wildfire forces the evacuation of more than 500 homes and some 1,200 residents in a rural area east of the state capital Sacramento. Mana Rabiee reports.

Some 1,200 residents of Northern California were forced to flee their homes on Saturday. SOUNDBITE: Man saying: "Scary" The so-called Sands fire that broke out on Friday tripled in size on Saturday, forcing hundreds of evacuations. It's raging east of the state capital Sacramento in this rural area. SOUNDBITE: Man saying: "Your feel helpless, What can you do?" Todd Jenson hasn't been evacuated but many of his neighbors have. They're asking him for updates. SOUNDBITE: TODD JENSON, RESIDENT, SAYING: "Is their house still there? Are their animals still there?" He's been checking on their properties but he's also preparing for that knock on his own door. SOUNDBITE: TODD JENSON, RESIDENT, SAYING: "You grab your family. That's the most important thing, that's what I told my wife. We have a two-month-old baby at home and a three-year-old. My family is first." The fire's burned through some 4,000 acres and destroyed at least five buildings. More than 500 other structures are threatened. As of late Saturday, the blaze was about 20 percent contained. Officials think it may have started when a vehicle drove through dry brush.
