An unofficial truce ends on Eid al-Fitr with continued bloodshed, as a grim-faced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warns of a protracted offensive in Gaza. Jillian Kitchener reports.

Israel denies responsibility, saying it was a misfire by a rocket launched by Hamas militants. And in southern Israel, a mortar strike kills four people, and wounds many more. An unofficial truce for the holiday of Eid has collapsed. And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warns of a protracted campaign: (SOUNDBITE) (Hebrew) ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER BENJAMIN NETANYAHU, SAYING: "Stamina and determination are required in order to continue in the struggle against a murderous terrorist group that aspires to destroy us." Israeli tanks assemble at the border. Palestinian fighters slip into an Israel village. Flares light up Gaza's skyline. And the international community is scrambling to help bring peace: (SOUNDBITE) (English) SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY SAYING: "Too many lives ruptured and so it is imperative for all of us in positions of responsibility to do everything we can to try to find a diplomatic way a peaceful way forward if possible." More than 1,000 Gazans, mostly civilians, and more than 50 Israelis, mostly soldiers, have lost their lives in the ongoing war.
