A 77-year-old German lady and her more than 80-year-old American "Hudson" vintage car set off on a world tour, with photographers, camera crews and some 100 well-wishers bidding her farewell.
Heidi Hetzer, who enjoys local fame in her native Berlin as the former owner of several Opel car dealerships, has worked on cars since her youth and is a trained mechanic.
Asked which part she's most looking forward to, she answered:
SOUNDBITE: Heidi Hetzer, pensioner, saying (German):
"Lake Baikal to start with, then driving across the Andes in South America at a height of 5,000 meters, that will be special. The entire trip will be something special because I want to get to know the countries and its people. After all, I'm not traveling with a tour group. I'm on my own and that's totally different, especially with this old car."
Sunday's initial trip took Hetzer towards Vienna, with a map on her car door displaying Istanbul, Tehran, Russia and China as later destinations.
Just before she set off, the daredevil mother of two, told reporters that she's already asking herself whether she'll do this a second time.
