Emergency officials are on the scene in Venice Beach, where eight people were hurt when lightning struck Sunday afternoon. All eight were hospitalized. One victim was in grave condition and another was critical, an official said. (SOUNDBITE) (English) BATTALION CHIEF ARMANDO HOGAN, LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT, SAYING: "Most of them said they felt as though they were struck by lightning. They were either in the water or very near the water when this occured." Victims could be seen being taken away in ambulances. Lifeguards and medics on scene checked out some of the beachgoers, who said they were freaked out. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNNAMED BEACHGOER SAYING: "We got zapped. It felt like a lot of heat on the head, and a bit of pressure on the head. Eyes blurry a little bit. The lifeguards checked us out and brought us to the paramedics." (SOUNDBITE) (English) WITNESS NED WALKER SAYING: "Freakiest part about it there was clear blue sky overhead. The storm clouds were down further south. It was like the tip of the storm. That's why none of the lifeguards had pulled anybody from the water or anything like that." The National Weather Service had predicted a chance of thunderstorms in the area.
