It may look like a small arthouse theatre, but Le Beverley is Paris' last exclusively adult cinema.
The theatre opened 30 years ago when Grands Boulevards used to be full of similar venues. But now, with the advent of internet porn, all these businesses have gone and only Le Beverley remains showing pornographic films on a loop to around 700 people a week. Maurice Laroche is the owner of the cinema, who claims to had only watched two or three pornographic films before buying the theatre in 1992.
SOUNDBITE cinema owner, Maurice LaRoche, saying (French)
"There are clients that I've known since I came here, about 30 years ago. We've followed their working life, they've retired and since we're all about the same age they worry whether Le Beverley, as it's the last -- barely profitable -- cinema, is going to disappear or not. So every time (they say), "Oh you're still there. Phew, we saw that you were open. What will we do if Le Beverley closes? We'd have nowhere else to go." And I say, "Well there are the sex shops," and they say, "No it's not the same thing," and that's true."
Although Laroche says he doesn't see much future for the business when he retires, he will keep the doors open for his loyal customers until then.
