One dead, another injured after small plane crashes into parking lot

Witnesses describe the scene after a small plane crashes into a parking lot near a San Diego Cosco, injuring the female pilot and killing her elderly passenger. Mana Rabiee reports.

Investigators from the FAA are looking into this plane crash that happened right in the middle of a parking lot. It happened Wednesday, near a Cosco in San Diego. Air traffic control released audio of the pilot as her plane went down. (AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER) Go to full throttle (WOMAN) I'm full throttle (AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL) (inaudible) Some of the plane parts still smoldered as police and rescue workers investigated the scene. Witnesses described the moment of impact. SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED WITNESS SAYING: "I was walking up to the food cart to get a hot dog and my supervisor says behind me 'ah man a plane just went down. I took a couple of steps back and I see the puffs of smoke." An FAA spokesman says the Mooney M20 bounced while trying to make a landing, It continued westward then crashed into the parking lot. NATS: AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL "I'm going down." SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED WITNESS SAYING: "She hit the light pole, and when she hit the light pole, it just went down and I just saw the black smoke." The female pilot suffered major injuries and was taken to a trauma center. Her passenger, a woman in her 80's, was pronounced dead at a local hospital SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED WITNESS SAYING: "I'm running towards the plane, and luckily there's already a few people there trying to get the passengers out, fire starts burning up a little bit, so people start bringing extinguishers, and I see a couple of Cosco employees actually in there trying to get the passengers out." Local media said a helicopter pilot heard a transmission from the pilot of the plane. He says she was telling the control tower she had lost power and was going down. Officials from the FAA are talking to witnesses and an investigation is underway.
