The skies are clear over the Gaza Strip and the relentless sound of artillery and tank shelling has mostly fallen silent. Vehicles can be seen back on the roads and people on the streets. Palestinians are streaming back to the homes they'd fled during weeks of fierce fighting. They're hoping their houses are still standing and trying to piece together their lives. A three-day ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militant groups went into effect on Friday. But soon after the truce began Gaza officials said Israeli tanks opened fire in the southern Rafah area. Hamas media reported that several people were killed. Negotiators from both sides are to travel to Cairo to discuss a longer-term solution. Scores of Israeli soldiers and nearly 1500 Palestinians have been killed in the fighting. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) HAMAS SPOKESMAN IN GAZA, SAMI ABU ZUHRI, SAYING: "Acknowledging a call by the United Nations and in consideration of the situation of our people, and after the discussions with resistance factions, we agreed to a 72-hour humanitarian and mutual calm that begins this morning on Friday at 8 a.m. (0500 GMT)." It's a fragile peace... only hours after the ceasefire went into effect it already appeared to be crumbling.
