Crews and residents working through the night, are still digging out after mudslides engulfed parts of Mt. Baldy in southern California on Sunday. Weekend rains unleashed entire hillsides, with water and mud destroying homes and covering roads. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SHAWN CATE, MT. BALDY RESIDENT, SAYING: "I've lived up here since 1970 and never seen it like this before." When resident Shawn Cate returned home, he found mud everywhere. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SHAWN CATE, MT. BALDY RESIDENT, SAYING: "It filled up our laundry room over there with about four feet of sand and water. Our dogs were in there actually too." A neighbor came to the dogs' rescue. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CONNOR MITCHELL, NEIGHBOR, SAYING: "Their yard was destroyed and their fence was blown out. And so we went back to check on the dogs and one of the dogs was stuck in the mud. Another one was standing on the dryer." (SOUNDBITE) (English) JANICE RUTHERFORD, SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SUPERVISOR, SAYING: "A lot of homes had mud just wash right through their windows and doors. So we have rooms and basements that are completely buried. We have entire rooms that have been taken out." The mudslides also killed one man, sweeping his car off a mountain road. The clean-up is expected to take several days.
