Life’s a beach for Japanese company

A Tokyo company is making its work environment as relaxing as a day at the beach. Tara Cleary reports.

If you can't have your office at the beach, why not bring the beach into your office? That's what Tokyo company Bizreach has done. CEO, Soichiro Minami. SOUNDBITE: Soichiro Minami, CEO of Bizreach, saying (Japanese): "I want our employees to use this space not only as a show-case to visitors but also to use it for their daily meetings, so that they can think more freely, become more creative, and come up with more unique ideas." Minami has transformed the reception area into a faux seaside, complete with two tons of real sand, a projected 3D image of lapping water and relaxing ocean sounds. The area is also used as a staff lounge and employees say the seaside theme inspires them. SOUNDBITE: Kurumi Nishi, Bizreach employee, saying (Japanese): "The sound of waves comforts me. I don't think I need a vacation this summer as I'm already refreshed." SOUNDBITE: Ayami Oda, Bizreach employee, saying (Japanese): "It's air-conditioned in here, so it's a bit different from a hot beach, but other than that I feel almost like I'm working on a beach." And for those who want an authentic beach experience, there's nothing like the irritation of sea sand in your shoes.
