A Missouri man is the first inmate to be put to death since Arizona's botched execution last month when it took inmate Joseph Wood more than 90 minutes to die. Michael Worthington was executed by lethal injection at a Missouri prison. He was pronounced dead 10 minutes later. Worthington was convicted of raping and killing a college student in the St. Louis area in 1995. His lawyers had asked the Supreme Court to put off his execution until more scrutiny could be given to what happened in Arizona. And because of ongoing secrecy in Missouri about the lethal injection drugs being used. His execution comes under mounting controversy over the use of new lethal injection drug combinations. This year alone, there have been three executions that have gone awry. In Arizona last month, Joseph Wood gasped and struggled to breath for more than 90 minutes. Oklahoma inmate Clayton Lockett died in April of an apparent heart attack after his lethal injection. And in January, Ohio inmate Dennis McGuire reportedly snorted and convulse for about 25 minutes before dying.
