At least five car bombs exploded at crowded markets in Shi'ite districts of Baghdad on Wednesday (August 6), killing up to 51 , police said. Two car bombs exploded nearly simultaneously at a crowded markets of the capital's teeming Shi'ite slum of Sadr City. Later, another car went off in the nearby neighbourhood of Ur, while two other cars exploded in the predominantly Shi'ite districts of Ameen and Ne'eeriya. Islamic State Sunni militants, which have declared a 'caliphate' in swathes of Iraq and Syria that it controls and threatens to march on Baghdad, have claimed several Baghdad bombings in the past and believe Shi'ites are infidels who deserve to be killed.
