STORY: UPSOT: POUNDING MUSIC In the past two decades Brighton beach has become one of Britain's prime party destinations. UPSOT: POUNDING MUSIC Now the south coast city's seafront is getting a major facelift, courtesy of what its designers are calling the world's first vertical cable car. Construction has already begun on the Brighton i360, designed by the architects behind the iconic London Eye. 162 metres high, the i360 will have an observation pod that can climb to 138 metres, making it the highest UK visitor landmark outside London. A curved glass pod will climb the tower using the same mechanism used in standard cable cars. 18 metres in diameter the pod will host up to 200 people. Architects Marks Barfield say visitors should be able to see up to 30 miles into the distance. The building will also be eco-friendly, containing interior spaces cooled by natural ventilation, toilets that use harvested rainwater, and renewably-sourced electricity. Brighton i360 Ltd expect 700,000 visitors per year when it opens in 2016….they say it will light up one of the UK's best known seafronts. UPSOT: FIREWORKS BY SEA
