Oscar Pistorius murder trial ends, verdict due September 11

The murder trial of Oscar Pistorius comes to an end, as the defense wraps up its closing arguments and leaves the judge to decide the fate of South Africa's ''blade runner''. Mana Rabiee reports.

The defense team for Oscar Pistorius has wrapped up its closing arguments, and so the murder trial of the South African sports icon comes to an end. (nats defense) "And that's the crux of the case." All along, the defense team has said the shooting death of Pistorius' girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, in his Pretoria home last year was a tragic accident. They say Pistorius thought she was in intruder behind a locked bathroom door. Lead defense attorney Barry Roux. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DEFENSE ATTORNEY BARRY ROUX SAYING: (SOUNDBITE STARTS OVER SHOT 2) "When he heard the noise, was he negligent? Was he acting reasonable? It's a value-judgement." But the prosecution has portrayed Pistorius as a hot head, obsessed with guns. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel ended the proceedings by cutting through months of complex evidence -- and returning to the core of his argument. (SOUNDBITE) (English) STATE PROSECUTOR GERRIE NEL, SAYING: "The accused intended to kill a human being. My lady, he knew there was a human being in the toilet that's his evidence. He can't get away from that." Pistorius also faces a lesser charge of culpable homicide -- comparable to manslaughter. It could carry a 15-year sentence, but a conviction for intentional murder could land him in prison for life. (nats judge) "We shall be back here on the 11th of September..." Now the difficult task of reviewing 4,000 pages of testimony. With no jury the verdict will be decided by Judge Thokozile Masipa. (nats courtroom bows) And with that, Oscar Pistorius leaves court for the last time, until he returns again to learn his fate.
