A small group of demonstrators had remained on the streets past the midnight curfew. Local tv showed video of police using loudspeakers and smoke canisters to disperse the crowds. Later, during a news conference, Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson said police used the tear gas and heavy body armor because something else was going on. There had been a shooting incident at a nearby restaurant- which left one person in critical condition- and the gunman was still on the loose. Johnson said the police were trying to keep the public safe. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CAPTAIN RON JOHNSON OF MISSOURI STATE PATROL SAYING: "I tell you we have a shooting victim that's in critical condition that may lose their life. We had a subject standing in the middle of the road with a handgun. We had a police car shot at tonight, and yes I think that was a proper response tonight to maintain officer safety and public safety." Demonstrations and looting have been ongoing since last week's shooting death of an unarmed 18-year old black teenager by a white police officer.
