ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
Omaha police say an officers' gunfire killed a 'Cops' television show crew member and a robbery suspect at a fast-food restaurant Tuesday evening (August 26).
The shooting happened after officers interrupted a robbery at a Wendy's. They say the man fired shots from a handgun that turned out to be an Airsoft pellet gun.
Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said Wednesday (August 27) that witnesses and officers thought the robbery suspect's Airsoft handgun was real, although it fires only plastic pellets. Chief Schmaderer said he believes the three officers involved had no choice but to respond.
The suspect in the robbery, 32-year-old Cortez Washington, was shot and later died at the hospital. Crew member Bryce Dion was also fatally shot.
Police say crews have been filming in Omaha since June.
