Now we've got a real space race pitting two billionaire tech entrepreneurs: the man behind the maker of this SpaceX rocket,, Elon Musk ... and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Bezos runs a little known startup called Blue Origin. And a source says that company will hook up today with a Boeing and Lockheed Martin joint venture to develop a new rocket engine. The Wall Street Journal says Blue Origin could supply it with parts or technical know-how. That joint venture's rocket currently uses engines built in Russia, and it and the U.S. want to reduce its reliance on Russia amid heightened tensions. So it's looking for alternatives. Musk is seeking to have his Falcon 9 rockets certified. But that process may be delayed as officials investigate the recent explosion of a SpaceX experimental rocket that uses the same engines as the Falcon. On another front, SpaceX had been considered the leading competitor for the fat NASA contract to develop space taxis. But the Journal reports that Bezo's new ally, Boeing, is now poised to win the bulk of that work. Bet Musk won't be having a blast today.
