ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Pennsylvania state senator Jim Ferlo announced on Tuesday (September 23) that he's gay, coming out publicly while pushing for the passage of legislation to outlaw discrimination based on someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. His announcement, in which he said he never denied being gay, and the legislation came after a violent attack on two gay men in Philadelphia. "I just decided this was something normal for me, comfortable," Ferlo said at a news conference. "As many of us in the gay community say, don't fight the feeling. Well I've never fought the feeling and I've had great friendships and relationships and I am gay." Ferlo is the first sitting Pennsylvania state senator who is openly gay and the third state lawmaker to come out. After 12 years in the state senate, his final term will end November 30.
