Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko greets US Assistant Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland, in Kiev. As they sit down, Poroshenko focuses on tightening control over the Ukraine-Russia border. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT, PETRO POROSHENKO, SAYING: "And we think that without the closing of the border, without the restoring the Ukrainian control over the border, it would be impossible to stop the conflict. And the sovereign border is the key element of the sovereign state." Nuland offers praise. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE FOR EUROPEAN AND EURASIAN AFFAIRS, VICTORIA NULAND, SAYING: "We hope you could feel recognition of your personal courage in standing for peace, your success in stopping the war." While the ceasefire holding in large parts of eastern Ukraine, the truce appears to have bypassed Donetsk-- a symbol of the conflict. Pro-Russian separatists now control large parts of the Donetsk region. Ukraine is preparing to hold parliamentary elections on October 26, hoping it would help bring stability to a country scared by war.
