Big blackout at Google. Its ad server crashed, disabling publishers around the world from loading ads on their websites -. Victims included the likes of the Wall Street Journal, BBC, Forbes and Reuters. The culprit? Google says it was a software bug. Tech blog The Next Web said the outage hit publishers around 9:40 AM Eastern. Ads went blank, and some websites failed to load. Google said the outage at its DoubleClick ad network lasted two hours. But Reuters correspondent Jennifer Saba says those 2 hours of blackout could be costly. SOUNDBITE: JENNIFER SABA, CORRESPONDENT, REUTERS (ENGLISH) SAYING: "Hundreds of millions of dollars go through DoubleClick. It's the largest ad platform in the U.S., so it could mean that some of these sites are out of this money or it could mean that Google may have to make it up for them." USAToday publisher Gannett took a snarky view, tweeting, "Enjoy your ad-free experience on usatoday.com right now, brought to you by Google."
