ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Police and protesters clashed in Basel on Friday evening (December 5) as an anti-OSCE demonstration turned violent. Masked protesters threw projectiles and firecrackers at riot police, who responded by firing smoke bombs. The protest took place at the end of a meeting which gathered foreign ministers from member countries of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Demonstrators took to the streets of Basel shouting and holding large anti-OSCE banners as riot police lined the street. Talks at the OSCE summit held on Thursday and Friday focused on the crisis in Ukraine. Demonstrator Denis Melnichuk, from East Ukraine, told Reuters Television he was there in support of his country. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Thursday (December 4), Russia had pitched itself into isolation through its own actions in Ukraine and could rebuild international credibility only by ending its support for pro-Russian separatists. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the West earlier on Friday for what he said were constant attempts to blame Russia for the crisis in east Ukraine and said Moscow was not isolated over the conflict.
