Stampede kills dozens in Shanghai

Dozens of people are killed in a stampede at a New Year celebration in the Chinese city of Shanghai. Paul Chapman reports.

At least 35 people are dead. More than 40 others were injured in what some say was a rush to pick up fake money thrown from a bar above At Shanghai Number One People's hospital friends and relatives wait desperately for news of loved ones. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) RELATIVE IDENTIFIED AS MS FAN SAYING: "I just want to know what's going on inside. Many relatives asked to go inside and asked the hospital for a list of the injured including the conscious and unconscious ones who are being treated in there, but nobody got back to us." Survivors spoke of the chaos and panic as the stampede erupted. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) INJURED MAN IDENTIFIED AS MR. YANG SAYING: "People standing above us pushed us down, we couldn't get up. A line of people who had stood above us fell onto us, so we were pushed down." Personal possessions and clothing lay among the debris as authorities began clearing up the scene. State television says President Xi Jinping's ordered the Shanghai government to find out what went wrong and learn lessons from it. The Shanghai government says an investigation is already underway.
