Boston has been chosen as the American city that will bid to host the 2024 Olympics. The United States Olympic Committee's board of directors unanimously endorsed Boston over two-time host Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington --- a surprise pick welcomed by city leaders, like Council member Stephen Murphy. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Murphy, Boston City Council, saying: "It's great. And we were up against some stiff city competition." Home to one of the world's most famous marathons, Boston has never hosted an Olympics. Opponents say the cost could outweigh the benefits. SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Dempsey, No Boston Olympics "If you look at the history of cities around the world, they have not done well with the Olympics. You end up building a bunch of stuff, but you build stuff that you don't need." The U.S. has not hosted a Summer Games since the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. A decision on the 2024 host is expected in mid-2017.
