McDonalds tries healthy approach

McDonalds tests new cafe in Sydney where quinoa salad replaces burgers and fries. Julie Noce reports.

There aren't any golden arches, but this trendy looking cafe in Sydney, Australia is still a McDonalds. The company is only testing The Corner, where chipotle pulled pork and brown rice salads are on the menu. It's all an attempt by the fast-food company to keep up with other 'fast-casual' establishments that offer healthier choices. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SYDNEY UNIVERSITY BUSINESS ACADEMIC, ROHAN MILLER SAYING: "I think McDonalds globally are going through a transition. That's been driven partially by the push towards healthy foods. Obesity is obviously an epidemic. Sodas, sugary drinks, there's a big backlash against them globally, so I think McDonalds has taken a broader look at the world and gone, well, we're in the breakfast, lunch and dinner business so we have to look at how we fulfill that niche and part of that niche is going to be fulfilling it in a healthy, socially responsible way." The fast-casual sector which includes outlets like Chipotle Mexican Grill and Panera Bread Company is growing at breakneck speed, led in large part by the U.S. MacDonalds isn't saying how far it might go with its trendy new experimental restaurant but it seems to have a taste to explore new markets.
