ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Around two hundred people gathered to protest Islamic fundamentalism in central Copenhagen on Monday (January 19). The demonstration was organised by PegidaDK, based on the anti-Islam movement PEDIGA -- "Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West" -- that organises weekly protests in Germany. Protesters marched along the dark streets of Denmark's capital while waving Danish flags and and lighting torches. Police officers closely monitored the demonstration, which started outside the city's National Gallery, and then moved to Copenhagen's landmark monument the Little Mermaid. The organisers said the demonstration was an opportunity for Danes to stand up against what he called an aggressive religious movement. Lina Gotterman, a Danish Jew, said she joined the crowd of demonstrators in support of freedom of expression. On the opposite side of a street where PegidaDK protesters had gathered, a counter-demonstration was underway. Counter-protester Dorthe Guldfeldt explained that her demonstration was necessary in order to speak up against racism. Danish media reported that Copenhagen police had received several requests to stage counter-demonstrations in the capital. Police in the German city of Dresden banned all outdoor public gatherings on Monday including one by PEGIDA, that attracted 25,000 people to its rally last week, due to "concrete threat" of an attack against one of the group's leaders.
