As Ukraine war expands in the east, Germany's Merkel says diplomatic efforts must continue. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

They are heading out of town in eastern Ukraine as pro-Russian separatists expand their fight. Kiev's Western allies are alarmed over the rebel advance in recent weeks--which all but ended a five-month-old ceasefire. They board buses provided by the Ukrainian emergency ministry. German Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledges that the situation is getting worse as she continues to push for a diplomatic solution. (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "The negotiation process has not yet failed, but it does not lead to results that quickly as we would like. And the situation has become indeed much more serious. But the attempt of diplomatic efforts must continue." But with the battlefield expanding in the east -- there is now talk that the U.S. may provide arms to Ukraine with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry due to visit Kiev Thursday. But the prospect of new arms raises the risk of escalating the war in a conflict that has already killed more than 5,000 people.
