NATO meets to strengthen forces in eastern Europe

As casualties rise in eastern Ukraine, NATO defense ministers meet to sign off on a network of command centers in eastern Europe to rapidly reinforce the region in the event of any threat from Russia. Jillian Kitchener reports.

NATO Defence ministers say the time has come to do more to protect Eastern Ukraine against interference from Russia. Meeting in Brussels, they're expected to more than double the size of their rapid reaction force to 30,000 soldiers and sign-off on a network of command centres. British Defence Minister, Michael Fallon says the UK is ready to act. (SOUNDBITE) (English) BRITISH DEFENCE SECRETARY, MICHAEL FALLON, SAYING: "I'm delighted to announce today that the United Kingdom will commit up to 1,000 troops to lead the Very High Readiness (Joint) Taskforce in 2017." The United States is also weighing its options. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Kiev to discuss the possibility of arming Ukraine for the first time. The meetings come at a pivotal time in the conflict. In contested cities like Donetsk, the fighting has escalated in recent days.. Rebel officials say at least 7 civilians were killed and 33 injured in Donetsk within a 24 hour span. ...raising the stakes in a conflict European leaders fear could quickly spiral even further out of control.
