After a tense six-weeks, Republican Aaron Schock is resigning from Congress, according to a statement issued Tuesday. The 33-year-old has been hounded with questions over his use of taxpayer dollars, after the Washington Post reported a lavish redesign of his Capitol Hill office. He's also been criticized for posting flashy photos on social media of himself traveling, surfing and other such adventures. ...An issue he defended last week: (SOUNDBITE) (English) REPUBLICAN AARON SCHOCK, SAYING: "I know that when I take a trip, and I post photos online, it can create the misimpression of being out of touch or an image that is not worthy of my constituents. I have tried to balance being a young congressman, and doing things differently and more open, with maintaining a level of seriousness on the issues of the day." Several media outlets have reported that he failed to disclose some expenses and improperly used taxpayer funds. Calling the controversy "a great distraction" to his job, Schock will reportedly step down as of March 31st.
