In front of a raucous crowd of supporters Wednesday night, Senator Bob Menendez vowed to fight his indictment on corruption charges. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SENATOR BOB MENENDEZ, NEW JERSEY DEMOCRAT, SAYING: "I am outraged prosecutors at the Justice Department were tricked into starting this investigation three years ago with false allegations by those who have political motives to silence me. But I will not be silenced." The high-ranking Democrat was indicted for alleging accepting up to $1 million in lavish gifts and campaign contributions from Salomon Melgen, a Florida ophthalmologist. In exchange, the court filing said Menendez used his position to benefit Melgen's financial and personal interests. Some of the gifts included flights on private jets, use of a Caribbean villa and money for Menendez's 2012 Senate campaign. Menendez and Melgen both face charges of conspiracy, bribery, fraud and violating travel rules. Mendendez said he intended to prove prosecutors were wrong. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SENATOR BOB MENENDEZ, NEW JERSEY DEMOCRAT, SAYING: "And I ask my friends, my colleagues and the community to hold their judgment, and remember all the other times when prosecutors got it wrong. I'm not going anywhere." Menendez is due in court Thursday.
