This was supposed to be one of the most secure locations in London. But the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit building is now the scene of what could be the biggest heist in British history. Between 60-70 security deposit boxes containing diamonds and jewellery were broken into over the Easter weekend. No confirmation on official losses yet from police. But a former jewellery investigator suggesting they could be as high as 200 million pounds. For local diamond traders, the news couldn't be worse. SOUNDBITE: Deposit box holder, Gerry Landon, saying (English): "Unbelievable.I cannot believe that, they should have had extra security, especially over the Easter holiday." On the roof, a door the only visible evidence of how the thieves broke in. Using the quiet of the bank holiday weekend, police say they gained access to the vault after abseiling down a lift shaft. A sophisticated security system was disabled, and heavy cutting equipment used to breach the doors. SOUNDBITE: Local diamond trader, Mohammed Jaleel, saying (English): "Everyone is shocked about the alarm systems, how they just went through there was only two security people, how the alarms haven't rang, so this is why people are so upset, because when you've got more than 300 safes, it's like a movie that I watched." Hatton Garden is well known for its diamond trade. But not all the items that were being held in the vault are insured. Catching those that did this is the priority for police. But London's diamond traders will want to know how a facility designed to be secure could have been hit so easily.
